An elderly Lincoln woman is mourning the loss of her dog after it was attacked by a pit bull Sunday night. The big question now: is the neighborhood safe?
The Campos family is outside enjoying the warm weather now, but concern weighs heavy on their minds. They're concerned for the safety of their children after seeing a neighbor's dog attacked and killed by a pit bull dog.
“It had just roamed over in front of her front steps and then they kind of met eyes and did that growl, growl. And then that pit bull just came after her,” Debra Campos said.
Debra Campos says she was inside her home when she heard a scream Sunday night. When she went out, she saw her 90-year-old neighbor trying to rescue her daschund from the pit bull. It took three people to finally get it off.
“It just had a really, really hard grip on her dog and wouldn't let go,” Campos said.
Animal Control did respond to the attack, but many questions still remain. We know that the pit bull was not on a leash and was being watched by a care taker while the owner was out of town.
But we don't know if the female dog has a violent history, will be put down or if any citations will be written. That investigation is still ongoing.
While the Campos' neighbor mourns the loss of little Daisy – a gift from her late husband – the family says the attack serves as a good reminder for all dog owners.
“You have to be a good pet owner and take care of your dog and teach it to behave and all that. So I mean, it doesn't necessarily have to be a pit bull. It could be any breed,” Campos said.
We did try reaching out to the owner of the pit bull dog but no one would comment.
