Seward County Sheriff nets thousands in drug money
Seward County Sheriff's Office deputies found more than $105,000 in cash hidden in a car traveling west on Interstate 80 Wednesday.
Around 12:50 p.m., a Seward County deputy sheriff stopped a 2010 Dodge SUV for a traffic violation. While interviewing the driver, the deputy was given consent to search the vehicle. The sheriff says the deputy found $105,800 in the liner of a piece of luggage in the back of the SUV.
The sheriff says the driver, 35-year-old Robert Davey of Kearny, New Jersey was taken to the sheriff's office and interviewed. Davey was cited for one count of suspected possession of drug currency and released.
A Seward County Sheriff's K9 Unit assisted in the investigation. The Seward County Attorney and a federal agent with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) also assisted in the investigation of the suspected drug currency.
“Since the beginning of the year, our drug interdiction efforts have netted nearly $325,000 in suspected drug currency that will be used for law enforcement purposes,” said Seward County Sheriff Joe Yocum. “We can use these seized assets to assist our agency in the purchase of patrol vehicles, mobile radios, ballistic vests, K9 supplies, and other related items directly associated with drug enforcement operations. These seized assets can also be used for Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) materials and training for our staff.”
