Meals On Wheels Needs Help

All the snow is making it tough to get food to some people who need it.  Meals On Wheels is putting out a call for help.

Tabitha's Health Care Services has been delivering hot meals to the elderly, those who just can't get out of their home, or the disabled for more than 40 years

The program can't go on without volunteers and now more than ever, they need your help.

At 91 years old, Virginia Williams has a heart condition, uses a walker to get around and has very little central vision.  For these reasons, she depends on Tabitha's Meals On Wheels program seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Virginia says, “I can still cook to a certain extent, but the recipes have to be very simple.”

She is just one of more than 400 people throughout the community that rely on Tabitha's services.

Meals On Wheels can't deliver without volunteers and because many of the volunteers are elderly themselves, it's not always easy for them to get around either.

That's why Tabitha Volunteer Coordinator, Margo McKendree says right now, they need all the help they can get.

She says, “this winter has been a little hard on them to get out and deliver.  Some people, their vehicles just aren't able to get out in the weather.”

With the day off and a four-wheel-drive vehicle, Jill Neeman says she came to deliver.

Even though it's only for a day, every lit bit and every person matters.  She says, “when its cold like this, people don't get out.  This is the only person these people see and they rely on this for their food, so it's important.”

Anyone can volunteer.  It can be once a week, or just during days like today.

They start loading up meals around 10:45 a.m. and it usually takes about an hour or hour and a half to do.
