Will Bolt introduced as Huskers head baseball coach

LINCOLN – It took about an hour in Denver before an official offer was on the table.

Just a few days later, Will Bolt was Nebraska’s new baseball coach.

A short coaching search by athletic director Bill Moos yielded Will Bolt as the new Big Red skipper, bringing the former Husker captain back to Lincoln from his assistant coaching position at Texas A&M.

Late last week, Moos and Bolt met in Denver before Nebraska presented its only official offer of the coaching search. Thursday, with a family of five in tow, Bolt put on the red ballcap for the first time as the Huskers’ head man.

“This was a no-brainer for me,” Bolt said, “just as far as the job, the opportunity, everything that Nebraska baseball means to me. So that moved very quickly, I had a chance to meet with Bill and the rest is history.”

A team captain in 2001 and 2002, Bolt has held every position within the Nebraska baseball program from player to volunteer coach to paid assistant to head skipper. The Conroe, Texas native clinched the final out for the Huskers’ first College World Series team in 2001.

Just shy of 40 years old, Bolt will begin his second head coaching job at Nebraska, and first in Division 1. He spent four years as the head coach at Texas junior college Texarkana in the mid-2000s.

Bolt also introduced his assistants, former Husker catcher Jeff Christy (pitching coach) and former Sam Houston State assistant Lance Harvell (hitting coach and recruiting coordinator). The new head coach’s yearly salary will be $300,000 with a pool of $350,000 for assistant coaches.
