Lincoln doctor explains why men should not skip annual visits
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)- Men see a doctor 50% less than women for their preventative care. According to the Men’s Health Network, this leads to higher sickness and death rates in men and women.
Dr. Michael Sayers is a primary care physician and medical director of Bryan Health’s physician network. He says men do not want to find out the bad news, women are more use to going to the doctor with annual examinations including a pap smear and pelvic exam.
“You don’t wait until your car breaks down before you change the oil or check the tire pressure,” Dr. Sayers said. “Feeling good is wonderful, but it is not a guarantee that there is nothing going on that we can intervene early and prevent something really bad from happening.”
In your 20’s and 30’s, Dr. Sayers recommends seeing a doctor every 3 years. Men in their 40’s should should start going every 2 years and after 50 years old, you should be going every single year. This all starts by finding a doctor that fits you.
“Ask around, talk to your colleagues, talk to your friends, talk to your families because almost everybody knows somebody who goes to a doctor that they enjoy,” Dr. Sayers said.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Sayers says there has been a rise in mental health issues. He wants to smash those stigmas around men getting health care for not only physical, but also mental health.
“I think men should know that its not a sign of weakness or lack of masculinity if you struggle with your mental health,” Dr. Sayers said. “Get in and see your doctor or provider, who ever you need to see to get these things talked about.”
If money is something you worry about, Sayers says almost every insurance company covers preventative care. Also, every providers office has things in place to help with payment plans. For example, Bryan Health has a program for those needing assistance with medical bills.
