Three Moore Middle School students teach how important translating books can be for LPS students

At West Lincoln Elementary, three Moore Middle School students put on a play for English language learning students emphasizing the importance of translating books to give everyone a chance at learning.

“We’ve learned that like anyone can make a difference so like even though we’re 6th graders and then we have a 7th grader we can still make a difference in our community,” Matthew Killham a 6th grader said.

Matthew, Darian, and Lily have been working for several months on this play, so getting to this point is a monumental day.

“We’ve been working since late December and just in planning this project and getting the books and getting them translated and now we finally get to see like how much we impact these kids,” Darian Kauk a 7th grader said.

Along with the play, the three students had 17 books translated into 7 different languages Lincoln Public Schools bilingual liaisons read book in languages like Russian, Karen, and Arabic.

In total at LPS, 142 languages are spoken the kids learned a lot from this experience, and those who helped organize the event say they’re proud to help them out.

“These are the kids who will lead the world at some point the future, and we need to provide them with the tools in order for them to be able to communicate multicultural speaking with the rest of the world,” Oscar Rios Poahirieth a LPS Bilingual Liaison said.

Even though all of the students learned a lot from the experience the adults say they were the ones who learned about how to communicate with one another.

“We could do that with one another. I may not know you but I can learn by doing a little bit of research by asking you a question by trying to collaborate with you in the hopes that through the process I can help,” Rios Poahirieth said.
