LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Students across Lincoln Public Schools competed Thursday in the district’s fifth annual science fair.

The event took place at the Sandhills Global Event Center, with students from fifth to eighth grade eligible to compete.

Upon registration, each student was set up with table space.

Students were also able to do the project either individually or with a partner.

The event started in 2020 as a way to encourage students to implement the things they learn in class, according to co-directors Amanda Higgins and Clare Robinson.

“It gets them into doing more technology, science and mathematical-based learning in a lot of different areas,” Higgins said.

She said it’s fun to see what the kids come up with.

Each year, the sixth graders make solar cars in their science classes. Lincoln Electric System set up an exhibit at the fair with a racetrack where students could race their cars.

Other exhibits included Girls Coding, Tesla and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Beef Lab.

The exhibits allow students to see real-world examples of how science is used.

Students can also fill out a passport as they attend exhibits and participate in the activities. Then at the end of the night, student who complete their passport are entered into a prize drawing.

LPS partnered with HobbyTown to provide prizes for the students.
