UPDATE: Cigarette causes house fire in north Lincoln

UPDATE: Lincoln Fire and Rescue says a cigarette is to blame for a house fire Tuesday morning.

It happened near 70th and Fremont.

Nancy Crist, a spokeswoman for LFR, says the fire was contained to a room in the basement, but still caused $70,000 in damage to the building, and $30,000 to the contents.

Thankfully, no one was injured.

The American Red Cross is helping the two residents find a place to stay.

An early morning house fire in north Lincoln has two people without a place to stay.

The fire broke out just before 6:15 a.m. Tuesday near 70th and Fremont.

Neighbors saw smoke and flames coming from a basement window and called 911.

Two people were inside at the time and got out safely.

We spoke with one of the residents, who says the fire was in a back basement bedroom that was unoccupied.

The location of the fire did pose a little difficulty for fire crews.

“The stairwell acts as kind of a chimney, so finding the stairs in that smoky environment and then descending into there, it just takes a little bit longer,” Battalion Chief Dave Engler said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.  There are no damage estimates at this time.

This is a developing story.  Check back with Channel 8 Eyewitness News for updates.
