DHHS to offer those with disabilities a ‘seat at the table’ through inclusion training

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, and the fight for inclusion continues in Lincoln, as the state health department is offering inclusion training webinars.
A state development disabilities director says this month is a time to educate the community about the nearly 5,000 Nebraskans with developmental disabilities, who receive support from the state.
During Developmental Disabilities Month, the state health department is holding Person-Centered Planning trainings. Director Tony Green says the pandemic has shown that people with developmental disabilities need a seat at the table.
“Whether that’s access to testing access to vaccinations,” said Green. “For folks that maybe haven’t been able to attend their jobs, or you know that maybe the business closed. And we’re working on issues with them around isolation and segregation.
He says inclusion is vital for people with developmental disabilities so they can live a full and productive life in the Capital City.
“Some of the things that are occurring at the trainings are really around, listening, and ensuring that the person that has a developmental disability; one is at the meeting, and two, that we’re listening to what they want to happen at the end of this week, how they want their services delivered like who they want those services delivered, where they want those services delivered,” said Green.
The training webinars will occur each Thursday at 7:00 pm through zoom and anyone can sign up to join. To sign up, click here. To see previous recordings of trainings, click here.
