Lincoln streamlines application process for housing assistance

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and community partners discussed expanded housing and utility assistance for the city of Lincoln Thursday.
Those who need help covering costs due to the pandemic can now apply for assistance online at lincoln.ne.gov/rent. Residents can also get help through a new “one-call” number, 402-413-2085.
Lincoln has received nearly $13.5 million in additional federal funds from the American Rescue Plan to help residents through the pandemic.
“We have secured millions of dollars in federal funding to keep roofs over heads by helping those in need of housing and utilities assistance,” said Mayor Gaylor Baird. “We urge community members to help us spread the word that help is here for anyone struggling to pay off their housing and utility debt as a result of the pandemic.”
This new system is to benefit both tenants and landlords, streamlining the process to access assistance.
Urban Development Director Dan Marvin said new federal funds are “a light at the end of the tunnel for many individuals and families saddled with housing and utility debt.” He said the expanded network of partners will help ensure that the distribution of the funds is “effective, efficient and equitable.”
Amanda Hammer, a Lincoln resident who benefited from these funds said, “Without this lifeline, my situation would be dire. I was able to stay housed through the most trying times.”
