LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — “It’s not like they’ve rehearsed, how they’re saying their lines,” said Brown. “It’s like it’s coming from the heart. It’s coming from the core.”

Belmont Track Scholars walked the red carpet on Thursday at the Lincoln Community Playhouse for the premiere of an LPS documentary, ‘We Will Not Be Silent’.

A virtual mentor came all the way from Georgia to surprise Belmont Elementary and cheer on the “TRACKS” students in person.

“Black Lives Matter is not really resonating as it should,” said Keith L. Brown. “When you hear these track scholars speak, that’s matter. Okay, their mouth. That’s matter, and when you know that you are hurting an individual and that individuals matter, the inner the internal as well as the external, then you’re going to have more compassion.”

Brown is Mr. I’m Possible and has mentored the kids throughout the pandemic. He says seeing this type of leadership in young people gives him hope for the future.

The students also did live poetry recitals and historical performances on the stage.

And it’s so powerful, and I can’t wait till they grow up,” said Brown. “I wish they were in power in leadership positions right now.”

Keith Brown is a well-known speaker and author receiving the presidential lifetime achievement award from former president Barack Obama. He works closely with Belmont Elementary staff, specifically Pete Ferguson who leads the Belmont Scholars.

Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird also attended the premiere along with select guests, staff, and families of the scholars.

The full performance received a standing ovation and cheers. The documentary goes public on Monday. To see it at the Lincoln Community Playhouse this weekend, click here.
