A bill that could arm teachers and administrators throughout Nebraska

The bill is named the School Safety Rapid Repose Option act which will allow school boards from across the state to decide if they want to allow school employees to carry handguns.

“It’s not just teachers, it can be administrators it can be an employee in the school but they will be vetted by the school board, they will be screened by the school board and they will be volunteers. No employee, teacher or administrator or otherwise will be forced to carry a gun to protect their students,” Sen. Steve Hollran said.

For some school administrators, they see the future of employees possibly having guns in schools as a major problem.

“I think it’s going to cause even more problems with teacher’s leaving the profession because we’ve heard from teachers who say if there are people in my school that are going to carrying guns that are not officers of the law, if my colleagues are going to be carrying guns or I’m in any way influenced in that. I’m quitting the profession,” Maddie Fennell Executive Director with the Nebraska State Education Association said.

One of the big goals from this bill for Sen. Halloran is to allow the communities around the state to have the choice of what they want to do with their school’s employees.

“I have all of the faith in the world and confidence in local control to make the right decision for this community, and who knows maybe nobody will do it and I’m ok with that, but I think they should have the option,” Sen. Steve Halloran said.
