‘A horrible idea’: Man burned leaves without permit near Lincoln on windy day, deputy says
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A rural Lancaster County man was ticketed Tuesday for burning leaves without a permit.
About 2 p.m., the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and the Bennet Volunteer Fire Department responded to a property just outside of Lincoln near Nebraska Parkway and Yankee Hill Road.
A 37-year-old man was raking leaves and blowing them into a firepit, where he burned them, Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said.
Lancaster County was under a red flag warning, and winds were gusting at 50 mph.
But the man argued with deputies and “seemed to have a difficulty understanding why it was a horrible idea to be burning leaves on this day,” Houchin said.
The fire did not spread.
The man was ticketed on suspicion of violating the statewide open burn ban.
Under state law, open fires are prohibited without a permit from a local fire chief.
