‘A meaningful change’: Lincoln Police have impounded nine vehicles under new ordinance

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Neighbors and drivers are feeling the impact of Lincoln Police Department’s nuisance vehicle ordinance.

Thursday marks one month since the start of the attempt to crack down on dangerous drivers.

The law allows officers to impound vehicles involved in street racing and reckless driving.

And LPD said it has already impounded nine vehicles.

“We really believe that this is a meaningful change that will protect our community and prevent further tragedies,” spokeswoman Erika Thomas said. “Together, we can all work to make Lincoln streets safer.”

Mary, a Lincoln woman who has lived near 29th and O streets for over 40 years, told Channel 8 that she has noticed a difference but thinks more could be done.

“I wish they would have more police officers down in this area because there’s several different parking lots where people will sit to watch the people race up and down O Street,” she said.

Mary also said the noise hasn’t gotten any better.

“The music and the cars going ‘boom-boom, boom-boom,'” she said. “It keeps my husband up because of the noise going up and down O Street and then coming down 29th Street.”

She added that the ordinance is important for the safety of the neighborhood.

“I worry about the kids in the neighborhood,” she said. “I mean, my grandkids grew up around here, and we had to keep them inside the gate of our property because we didn’t trust how the driving was going on.”
