‘A place you want to be’: City of Columbus sees uptick in tourists

COLUMBUS, Neb. (KLKN) – The community of Columbus is thriving.

The city logged around 130,000 overnight stays in September, some of it’s strongest numbers for tourism.

“We have worked hard to develop, what we consider quality of life aspects in Columbus,” said Mayor James Bulkley. “Things that really help people enjoy not only the everyday living in Columbus but the fact that it’s a place you want to be.”

Many around the community contribute the increase in visitors to the progression of the school system, infrastructure and job market – things that spark the interest of families.

Local business owners, like Barbara Duffy, have taken notice of a few new faces around town.

And she said the close-knit of the community helps to make everyone feel welcome.

“My customers come in and we know their first name, we know their family,” she said. “We know about their children, we ask about their children. Sometimes they have health issues and they’re sad and we try to make them happy. It’s just easy to get to know people here.”

Bulkley said although it’s a small town, Columbus is the place to be.

“I agree with everybody that comes to Nebraska and wants to see a Husker game,” he said. “They might want to take in the Henry Doorly Zoo, and those are great things and great family functions to do, but don’t forget places like Columbus can give you that full experience and make your day extremely comfortable.”
