The single vehicle accident happened just after 4 p.m. on I–80 between Greenwood and Ashland.

Officials say a car, carrying five passengers, was traveling westbound when the driver veered into the median and flipped.

One person was pronounced dead on the scene; four others were transported to the hospital.

Officials say it's possible the car that rolled had overcorrected into the median to avoid another car that was approaching their lane.

"Witnesses report him in the center lane, when another vehicle came over to that center lane. This vehicle swerved to the right and then came back into the median,” says Sgt. John Olsen, Nebraska State Patrol.

Authorities are looking for a new Jeep Cherokee; it is unclear at this time why that car drove from the scene.

Officials are still investigating the cause. There are no updates on the other passengers at this time.
