About 30 attend Stand Up For Science rally in Lincoln
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – About 30 students and teachers from across Lincoln assembled Friday afternoon at a pro-science protest.
“Science is near and dear to my heart, and I will support teachers and support good science research happening in our state,” said Christine Gustafson, who organized the rally at the state Capitol.
Stand Up For Science 2025 is a day of rallies nationwide that became local after Gustafson decided she wasn’t going to stay silent anymore.
She is a science teacher at Millard Public Schools and a University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate student.
Gustafson heard professors talking about losing funding for research projects that could make Nebraskans’ lives better and felt that she needed to say something.
According to its website, Stand Up For Science is a rally to defend science as a pillar of social, political and economic progress.
Their goal is to end censorship and political interference in science, secure and expand scientific funding, and defend diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility in science.
Gustafson said she wants her students to see that what she is teaching them matters and that future teachers will have a voice.
