Acting Chief Michon Morrow shares her vision for Lincoln Police Department

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Acting Chief Michon Morrow has been at the helm of the Lincoln Police Department since Teresa Ewins’ abrupt resignation last month.

On Tuesday, Morrow sat down with Channel 8’s Rod Fowler to talk about her vision for LPD.

Morrow started with the department in 1995 and worked her way up to captain, then assistant chief.

Ewins’ resignation quickly put her into this new spotlight, one she doesn’t mind.

“This opportunity presented itself to me unexpectedly, and I am committed to it,” she said. “I’m invested in it. And I am thoroughly enjoying my time.”

Morrow faces plenty of challenges.

Several officers have brought allegations of sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation in LPD in recent years.

Morrow said that although she hasn’t experienced any such conduct, “I don’t want to diminish anyone’s story.”

“I’m listening, and I’m learning,” she said.

Morrow said the department now has extra training to prevent harassment.

And future allegations will be investigated solely by the Lincoln Human Resources Department.

Ewins was accused of not being as transparent as she had promised.

Michon said transparency is important for building trust with the community.

“It’s really important to me that we get it right, in terms of accountability and accessibility from us,” she said. “And so I am committed to that.”

Morrow also said that if she can’t share information, she’ll give a reason.

The acting chief said the department has room for 36 more officers, but recruiting is a challenge.

And despite the recent turmoil, Morrow said morale in the department is high.

“I think we’re in a really good place,” she said.

There’s no word on a when a permanent chief will be chosen.

When asked if she was interested in that job, she would only say that she’s committed to serving the department.
