AG Hilgers, Sheriff Wagner issue alert about extortion scam in Lancaster County

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lancaster County residents were warned of an extortion scam on Thursday.

Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers and Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner sent out a press release saying scammers have been active recently.

These scammers have been using scare tactics and personal details like addresses, phone numbers and family names to pressure Nebraskans into sending money.

There have even been cases of scammers sending victims violent or threatening photos to scare them.

Some scammers claim to be FBI agents and police officers to get victims to comply, according to the press release.

Authorities recommend that Nebraskans take these steps to prevent scammers:

  • If you receive a threat that makes you fear for your safety, contact your local law enforcement and file a report.
  • If you need help identifying a potential scam, call the Consumer Affairs Response Team in the Attorney General’s Office at 402-471-2682.
  • Stop unwanted calls on your cellphone and landline. If you need help, there are free guides for iPhones, Androids and landlines available on the attorney general’s website.
  • Block threatening or suspicious emails, and do not click on any links.
