Air quality to improve, then late storm chances

Starting off Thursday morning, some of us woke up to slight improvements in our air quality. Namely off toward Omaha and areas north, air quality has improved to the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category, as we’re still battling unhealthy air for all here at home.

In case you missed it, here’s a look at our smokey sunrise from Thursday morning. We will start to see conditions improve later Thursday, especially by the evening.

An air quality alert is still in place for many through noon Thursday. Once we see winds start to shift out of the southeast instead of the north/northwest, we’ll be back on track to better air.

The second half of Thursday is when rain chances will start to ramp back up, too. After the evening commute, scattered showers and storms will pop up around northeast Nebraska and northwest Nebraska. Our better chance for rain looks to come late Thursday into early Friday.

Even though we’ll have light southeast winds and the surface, storms will be moving south and east through Thursday evening. A storm or two could be strong to marginally severe, with a Marginal (Level 1 of 5) risk issued across eastern Nebraska.

Boiling all that down, we should see hazy sunshine give way to late storms Thursday night. That activity will linger into early Friday, wrapping up before the morning commute.

After that, we’ll clear out for a fantastic Friday to end the week!
