As temps drop in Lincoln, People’s City Mission houses record-breaking 430 people

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The homeless shelter in Lincoln broke a capacity record Wednesday night.

The People’s City Mission said 430 people were staying there for the night.

The mission was designed to house 250 to 280 people.

“Beds have been added to expand that capacity, but it is a tight fit,” the shelter said in a press release.

On Wednesday, more than 140 people were expected to be sleeping on mattresses on the floor.

The influx of homeless people came as brutally cold temperatures descended on Lincoln.

A cold weather advisory has been issued for all of Nebraska.

The Storm Alert Team forecast a low of 8 degrees below zero on Thursday morning and a wind chill 18 below zero.
