Ashland-Greenwood football prepares for 2023 season
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Ashland-Greenwood BlueJays enter the 2023 season looking to build off a solid 9-2 season in 2022.
Head coach Ryan Thompson welcomes back a strong senior class along with some new faces on both sides of the ball.
“Our kids have done a great job. They feel like they want to be around each other. We feel like we have a pretty good, close, tight knit group.” said Thompson.
The BlueJays graduated some multi-year starters last season, but coach Thompson is confident those coming in to replace that group can have equal success.
“We’re just hoping that they kind of gel earlier than later, because I think they can do some pretty good things together.”
Retuning senior quarterback Dane Jacobsen enters his final year with the BlueJays.
Jacobsen finished his junior season with over 1,400 yards passing and 14 touchdowns through the air.
The senior signal caller says through the summer he’s been working more on reading the defense.
“I got more comfortable with reading the defense, so I can place the ball more where I need to.”
Alongside Jacobsen is returning senior running back Drake Zimmerman.
Zimmerman rushed for over 700 yards and scored 9 touchdowns on the ground in 2022.
The senior rusher says he’s been working hard in the weight room and has been focused on improving his vision while on the field.
“I feel like my visions increased a lot more.” said Zimmerman. “So, I’m excited to see how that pans out.”
The BlueJays begin the 2023 season on August 25th at Lakeview.
