Athlete of the Week: Diandra Asbaty

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) —Former Husker and National Champion Diandra Asbaty makes her return to Lincoln for the US Women’s Open at Sun Valley Lanes.
Asbaty was apart of the Nebraska Bowling team between 1999-2002, where she won two national titles including her freshman year. She was also the National Collegiate Bowler of the Year, a three-time All-American. She played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for Nebraska to become the most dominant bowling program in NCAA history.
With this year’s US Women’s Open taking place at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Asbaty is happy to be back.
“When you come and visit this campus, how could you say no?,” said Asbaty. “While I was here at school I went on to be on Team USA for 15 straight years.”
Asbaty was also etched into Nebraska history last week, being added to the 2025 Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame class. She said she’s happy to see the sport of bowling be elevated.
“It’s great for me. That’s awesome,” the 44 year-old said. ” Anytime bowling can be in the same conversation as football, gymnastics, volleyball, and any other sport, it’s a huge win for bowling.”
Asbaty will compete for a championship at this year’s US Women’s Open beginning Monday June 16.
Match play begins at 10 a.m.
The finals will be televised Tuesday at 6 p.m. on CBS Sports.
