LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Channel 8’s Athlete of the week goes to a senior at Lincoln Northeast.

Lazerek Houston, the 6’1 Point Guard has grown into a leader for the Northeast Rockets.

Fans saw a first hand glimpse at the teen’s talent when he scored 34 points , shooting 12/18 from the field in the Rockets 83-76 overtime win vs. Lincoln Southeast Tuesday night.

It was a masterful performance from the senior.

“Going through my head in warmups it really started in warmups you know just staying positive you know my shot I was kind of missing it in warmups but I just had to really lock in,” said Houston.

That he did, scoring on all levels of the court.

“He is just really dynamic. Obviously he is a really good athlete,” said Monte Ritchie, Lincoln Northeast’s head coach.

Houston’s leadership component is something that may not come up in the stat sheets, but is helping this team build towards their goals.

‘The thing I’ve been most impressed by (Lazerek) is he is starting to develop some leadership skills and really communicate with teammates and hold them accountable,” said Ritchie.

The Rockets are 7-3 this season having won back-to-back games over Lincoln Southeast and Columbus, but this ship is just getting prepped for takeoff.

Houston sees big things for this year’s team, but also has his eyes set on other goals.

“For the team right now I think we can make it to state,” said Houston. “For my goals, I want to get Gatorade player of the year. I’m going for that.”

The Rockets schedule this week will feature Norfolk at home Monday, and at Lincoln Southwest Friday night.
