AUBURN, Neb. (KLKN) – An Auburn family is left picking up the pieces after a weekend trip to South Dakota quickly turned south as their Ring camera alerted them to a terrifying scene.

“I went to look, and I saw that it was flames in the corner. I immediately woke up Eric and told him that I think the house is on fire,” Shawnee Snider, the homeowner, said.

It all happened later Saturday night. Shawnee’s father and the family’s three dogs were in the home at the time. Her father, an amputee, made it out just in time, but one of their three dogs didn’t.

The family returned home from their trip early to see their house had been completely destroyed.

“It was almost felt like a dream a little bit. It still almost feels like a dream because you know being woke up like that. I keep expecting to turn the corner and actually hope it’ll be there,” Snider said.

Shawnee, husband Eric, and their two children are now working to pick up the pieces and mend their broken hearts after the house they lived in for 11 years is now gone, and their beloved German shepherd is laid to rest.

“They just keep thinking about their baby pictures and their baby books, and my son told me today, he just misses laying on his bed,” Snider said.

The family does have a GoFundMe set up to help them find a new home and rebuild their life.
