Auto shop owner agrees with Lincoln racing rule but says it won’t stop the noise
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln Police Department started enforcing the nuisance vehicle ordinance on Tuesday.
The ordinance allows officers to impound vehicles involved in street racing and reckless driving.
David Hall is the owner of Restore a Muscle Car, where drivers can get their car customized, said he agrees with the ordinance.
“I, just like anyone else, enjoy having a fun time in my car,” he said. “But it’s got to be the right time and place to enjoy the car, and in the middle of town is probably not the best place to do it.”
The rule is a response to Lincolnites’ concerns over dangerous and noisy drivers.
“LPD responded to six deaths on O Street in the last five years along with more than 700 nighttime crashes and 600 injury crashes,” Lt. Dustin Romshek said in a video on X.
On the first offense, drivers will get a warning and have their cars towed away. But they can pick up their vehicles right away.
But repeat offenders will have their cars impounded for 10 days.
Hall said that he understands the ordinance but that there is only so much LPD can do about the street racing and excessive noise.
“I don’t know that they’re going to see a decrease necessarily,” he said. “There’s going to be cars that are going to be loud, and there’s not much that can be done about that. To control that, that would be pretty hard for LPD to do.”
And he said opening up a place for street racers isn’t such a bad idea.
“The City of Lincoln really should provide an area,” he said. “Whether it’s a drag strip or outside of city limits that kids can go to or adults can go to to actually enjoy their cars a little bit more instead of possibly having their car impounded.”
