Baby flying squirrel separated from his mom after being found in Lincoln attic

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A 5-week-old southern flying squirrel is receiving care after he was separated from his mother in Lincoln last week.

Nebraska Wildlife Rehab says he was removed from an attic and his mother never returned for him.

Wildlife Care Staff is now making sure he gets the support he needs, and they’re hoping to release him later this summer.

NWR is also researching the range of flying squirrels across our state.

Right now it’s comparing populations in Lincoln and other southeastern Nebraska communities.

It’s all part of a larger study that includes the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, University of Nebraska Omaha and University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Some results may be available as soon as this year.

If you’re interested in helping NWR support orphaned animals like the baby squirrel you’re encouraged to donate at SHARE Omaha’s website.
