Back-to-back: Husker baseball tops No. 2-seeded UCLA, repeats as Big Ten champions

Nebraska Wins Big Ten

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska baseball team finished its quest for back-to-back Big Ten titles on Sunday, beating No. 2 UCLA 5-0 at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.

This is the first time the Huskers have won back-to-back conference titles since they were in the Big 12 (1990-91). They are also the first back-to-back Big Ten champion since Indiana did it in 2013-14.

As a team, the Big Red racked up eight hits and committed zero errors, while the Bruins only managed four hits and committed zero errors.

Head Coach Will Bolt feels this team may have had an angel in the outfield.

“When the right fielder dropped the ball in the first game, it felt like Greg Sharpe reached down and knocked the ball out of his glove,” said Bolt. “It kind of felt like it was destiny. We played great baseball. We played as great as we’ve played all year to run through this tournament and win.”

The Huskers’ shutout came courtesy of sophomore pitcher Ty Horn.

Horn (3-4) pitched eight near-flawless innings, only allowing three hits and striking out six batters. Casey Daiss came on in the ninth inning and struck out the final two batters.

“Long innings as a pitcher are great, especially if you’re on offense,” said Horn. “The whole goal was to come out with an early lead, and just trust the coach in what he calls.”

Dylan Carey and Rhett Stokes led the Huskers from the plate, each racking up two hits.

“We just stuck with each other,” said Carey. “The second half of the year was a big turn around for us, and we just stuck to it. Look where it got us.”

Devin Nunez led the Huskers with two RBIs, smashing a two-run homer in the third inning.

It was a turbulent season for the Huskers, but this win puts Nebraska into the field of 64 for the NCAA tournament.

The Huskers will find out what regional they are headed to on Monday at 11 a.m.
