BackPack Extra Mile Walk raises money for Food Bank of Lincoln child hunger programs

The Food Bank of Lincoln relies on funds from the community to keep up with their child hunger programs.
This includes their backpack program, which provides food-insecure children in Lincoln schools with a backpack of food every Friday so they’re guaranteed a meal at home.
Lincoln Public Schools helps with these efforts by putting on the annual BackPack Extra Mile Walk. This year, the walk is Saturday, April 27 at 10 a.m. at Lincoln East High School.
Now in it’s 12th year, the walk has raised more than $1.5 million for the Food Bank of Lincoln’s child hunger programs, like the backpack program and the LPS Emergency Pantries.
Scott Young, the executive director of the Food Bank of Lincoln, says LPS’s support means the world to the mission they try to accomplish every day.
“Lincoln Public Schools really cares about it’s children, and the community’s children, and they always talk about they’re our kids, and we need to make sure they’ve got enough to eat on weekends,” Young said.
The backpack program serves 42 schools in the LPS district, along with five Catholic schools in Lincoln.
