Battle over abortions and transgender care heads to a Nebraska courtroom
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The recently passed law that limits transgender care and restricts abortions in Nebraska is being challenged in court this Wednesday.
The ACLU and Planned Parenthood filed the lawsuit against the Let Them Grow Act, saying it violates the single-subject rule in our state’s constitution.
Opponents have argued ever since the issues were packaged together that they’re unrelated subjects and should have never been combined in Legislative Bill 574.
Now the fight is heading to a Lancaster County courtroom. Both sides are expected to face a judge beginning at 10 a.m.
Opponents want to block the law’s enforcement, which prohibits gender altering procedures for Nebraskans younger than 19-years-old. It also prohibits abortions after 12 weeks.
CEO of Planned Parenthood North Central States Ruth Richardson previously said, “Nebraskans deserve the right to make private health care decisions that are best for them, their families, and their futures—not politicians, who now have more control over our bodies than we do.”
Governor Jim Pillen, who signed the bill into law back in May said, “LB574 is the most significant win for social conservatives in a generation, and is part of what has been a historic legislative session with senators voting for policies that protect our kids, cut taxes, grow agriculture, and defend our Nebraska values.”
