Beach at Nebraska’s Harlan County Reservoir closes due to E. coli

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A beach at a popular Nebraska lake is closed because of high levels of E. coli.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Wednesday that officials at the Harlan County Reservoir closed Gremlin Cove Beach.

E. coli is the most measurable health concern at swimming beaches, according to the corps.

It can reach dangerous levels in lakes when too much fecal matter is washed in.

The Corps of Engineers said the waste usually comes from birds, livestock, wildlife, humans and septic systems.

The beach will be shut down until E. coli levels fall below 235 colonies per 100 ml of water.

The water will be tested again on Tuesday.
