Beatrice police officers, Special Olympic athletes enjoy talking ‘smack’ during scrimmage

BEATRICE, Neb. (KLKN) – Beatrice Special Olympics and the Beatrice Police Department hosted their 10th annual basketball scrimmage Friday evening.

The event at Beatrice Middle School, which has grown into something that the local community looks forward to every year, advocates for acceptance and inclusion for those with special needs.

Heather Cullison, one of the event’s organizers, enjoys the community this event brings out.

“Our police officers just kind of help us get out there and help our athletes out there in the public and do a lot of community service,” said Cullison with Special Olympics. “So we just like to come together and have a little bit of a competition.”

Officer Courtney Brauch said the Special Olympics athletes look forward to this.

“They talk smack, and we talk smack back,” she said. “Every year we end up losing, but it’s a loss I’ll take.”
