Beatrice says crews are ‘hard at work’ removing debris from fire at old factory

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The City of Beatrice provided an update Tuesday on cleanup from a massive fire in March.

The city said on social media that the Street Department “has been hard at work” at the Dempsters complex, sorting and removing debris.

Crews are following all guidelines from state and federal health and environmental agencies, officials said.

“We want the community to know: we’re doing everything we can to address this situation in a way that is safe, budget-conscious, and strategic,” the city said on Facebook.

Part of the Dempsters site, an abandoned factory near Highway 77 and Perkins Street, erupted in flames on March 21.

The blaze was captured on Channel 8’s Schoen’s Roofing camera.

The old factory is an Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site due to hazardous materials there.

The city has been working to gain ownership of the entire complex to safely demolish it, and it expects to acquire the last parcel this fall.

Asbestos removal will be the next step, the city said.

Beatrice has also applied for an EPA grant to fund the cleanup.
