Bitterly cold before snow spreads east in Nebraska late Tuesday night

We’re gearing up for just our second winter storm of the entire season so far. Most of Nebraska has either been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning or a Winter Weather Advisory.

Lincoln and Lancaster County will be included in the Winter Weather Advisory from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 6 p.m. Wednesday. Southern Nebraska, closer to the Kansas border, will be under the Winter Storm Warning from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 6 p.m. Wednesday.

  • Winter Weather Advisory (purple) – snow is expected with travel potentially becoming difficult; hazardous conditions could impact both the morning and evening commutes Wednesday, strongest northeast wind gusts will be around 20 mph
  • Winter Storm Warning (pink) – heavy snow is expected with travel expected to be very difficult; hazardous conditions will impact both the morning and evening commutes Wednesday, strongest northeast wind gusts will be around 20 mph

Wswarnings

Snow will spread west to east Tuesday afternoon and evening, arriving in eastern Nebraska after about 10-11 p.m. Tuesday. The heaviest snow will fall after midnight through Wednesday morning, eventually tapering off through the afternoon hours Wednesday.

There will still be some dry air to contend with especially Tuesday night and the start of Wednesday morning, and we usually have more factors working against us than for us when accumulating snow. This is expected to be a dry, very fluffy type of snow.

Knowing that, here is the latest snow forecast:

Jb Snow Map

As we await the snow late tonight, it’ll be a bitterly cold day in the meantime. Temperatures will barely warm through the teens during the day.

Lincoln Today Hour By Hour

A northeast breeze around 10-20 mph will still have a good bite to it.

Lincoln Today Wind Gusts

So the wind chill will be closer to zero throughout the day, give or take a few degrees above and below. The “warmest” part of the day will still only feel like the mid-single digits.

We’ll get even colder with snow on the ground for Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
