Blood-soaked driver in Lancaster County had a mental health crisis, authorities say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Authorities say a man caught driving through fields while covered in blood was having a mental health crisis.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said it received several reports Tuesday morning of a vehicle going through fields and dragging fence posts behind it.

The first call came in at 5:51 a.m. near South 162nd Street and Old Cheney Road.

The sheriff’s office said the man eventually lost a tire, drove into a creek bed and got stuck.

Deputies found him with a self-inflicted wound from a sawblade across his chest.

The man was taken to a hospital, and no charges have been filed at this point.

The sheriff’s office said he’s responsible for thousands of dollars’ worth of damage, so it’s possible he could be charged with criminal mischief.

He’s also accused of stealing gas, as a pump was in the truck when deputies arrived.
