Blowing Snow Friday & Extreme Cold Saturday
A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is in place through Friday evening for Rock, Keya Paha, Boys, Brown and Holt counties. Blowing snow, whiteout conditions and snow accumulations up to 1″+ will be the main concerns.
Blowing snow showers will continue across Nebraska early Friday morning. The worst conditions will be near O’Neill, where Winter Weather Advisories are in place. Peak conditions: 7am-6pm. Snow squall warnings may be issued, mainly north of I-80, where brief whiteout conditions are possible. Travel slow and stay weather aware through Saturday as extreme COLD moves in! A few bands of moderate to heavy snowfall are possible through the afternoon and evening. Brief sleet could occur further SE. Strong winds will significantly reduce visibility at times, potentially dropping to near zero. Snow accumulations will vary and be difficult to measure as gusty winds limit totals and cause blowing and drifting.
Through Saturday, the best chance for more snow will be near and east of Valentine along the Dakota/Nebraska border. These snow bands will drift SE making for a better chance of accumulation in NE Nebraska. Localized heavier snow bands could occur making for more snow accumulations. Best chance for 1-2″ will be north of I-80.
Wind chills Friday will dip into the single digits by 7pm.
Friday will be windy all day! Gusts up to 60-70 mph further west and gusts near 40-50 mph further east. High profile vehicles will need to take it slow if traveling across Nebraska.
Saturday will be downright cold and blustery. Wind chill values will drop 10–25 degrees BELOW ZERO Saturday morning, with strong NW winds continuing through the afternoon.
Bundle up! BLUSTERY, windy and snowy conditions continue through Saturday. Saturday morning, wind chill values could reach 10-25 degrees below zero. Temperatures will feel like 0-5 degrees all day Saturday in eastern Nebraska. A great day to stay inside on Saturday. Another clipper system could bring light snow Sunday evening bringing colder air for MLK Day. Late next week, a potential system could bring even colder air with light rain/snow chances. Stay tuned and stay safe out there.
