Blue Star Mothers of Nebraska support veterans, active military members on Memorial Day

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Several Nebraska moms gathered Monday evening to honor and support veterans and active military members.

The group, Blue Star Mothers of America, is made up of mothers, grandmothers and any female guardian who has a child in active duty.

For Memorial Day, the group’s Nebraska chapter attended an observation ceremony at Antelope Park to provide support for families.

“As mothers who have a child serving, we have a void because our children are off serving,” chapter leader Lisa Compton said.

The group meets at the Lincoln VFW on the second Sunday of the month. They send care packages to active military with a mission, to show that they care.

“I met the blue star moms and began going to meetings, and here we are,” said Heather Burke, who stood by the entrance to the venue giving out handouts alongside her son Zane, who joined the Air Force last year.

“I knew she would support it, but now with this being a whole thing, I know she is all in it for me,” Zane said.

Another attendee, Nora Huscher, has been a member of the group for several years.  Her father served in World War II and her son is an active member of the Navy.

“We’ve all supported each other, if we need one another, you’ve got a friend, someone’s there for you,” said Joyce Peck, who lost her son in Afghanistan about fourteen years ago.
