Bond set at $25,000 for Omaha woman accused of trying to castrate dogs

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — An Omaha woman accused of trying to castrate her dogs appeared in court Friday.
Douglas County Judge Thomas Harmon set Jessica Charf’s bond at $25,000.
She must pay $2,500 to be released from jail. And if she is, she cannot own any animals while her case is decided.
Charf is charged with two counts of intentional animal cruelty.
Authorities said she tried to neuter her two dogs herself to save money.
Charf looked up “banding” on Google, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Banding is a common form of livestock castration that cuts off blood flow to the testicles, which eventually fall off.
But it is not recommended for dogs, the sheriff’s office said.
The procedure caused injury and infection for both dogs, according to authorities.
They needed surgery, court documents say, and are now in the care of the Nebraska Humane Society.
Charf’s preliminary hearing has been set for July 5.
