Breast cancer survivors gather in Lincoln for Thanksgiving meal

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Over 170 breast cancer survivors gathered in both Lincoln and Ralston to share a Thanksgiving meal on Sunday.

Project Pink’d, an organization that helps people with breast cancer, brought everyone together to share their stories and give thanks.

“We’re based around survivorship,” volunteer Shawn McCarville said. “We bring survivors together into different situations, different events, so they can meet other breast cancer survivors to make sure they know they’re not alone in this journey.”

McCarville said the organization focuses on supporting those with breast cancer from the moment of diagnosis and throughout their treatment to ensure they have the best quality of life.

She said Project Pink’d has been putting on these events for over 7 years now.

At the meal, participants could also sign up for a pre-made Thanksgiving meal delivered to their door next Sunday.

“Holidays can be especially hard for the day-to-day person,” McCarville said, “but put on being a breast cancer survivor – and even if you’re freshly out of treatment or in treatment – it’s exhausting.”

McCarville said all the programming for participants is free thanks to the project’s donors.

She’s hoping that as they grow, their events will be available further into western Nebraska and Iowa.
