The Texas native is Nebraska’s highest overall selection since 2005, when third baseman Alex Gordon was chosen No. 2 overall by the Kansas City Royals and the first 1st-round selection since 2006, when right-handed pitcher Joba Chamberlain was the No. 41 overall selection by the New York Yankees.

Earlier this week Matthews detailed his thoughts on a childhood dream becoming a reality.

“This is always like what I’ve dreamed of,” Matthews said. “Once I was kind of like old enough to understand what was going on on TV and watching baseball games and playing baseball video games, that’s like always what I wanted to do. I wanted to be on and to see my face on that screen and that’s been my goal ever since.”

With 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases, Matthews became the first player in program history and second player all-time in the Big Ten to reach the 20-20 club.

In his final season with the Huskers, Matthews appeared in 45 games, making 44 starts for Nebraska. He hit .261 at the plate with eight doubles and seven home runs.

He was also selected to the 2021 NCAA All-Fayetteville Region Team, Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2021.
