LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A poll released on Tuesday found that independent Dan Osborn has a 1-point lead over incumbent Republican Sen. Deb Fischer of Nebraska.

The result is a surprise in Nebraska, where Republicans have dominated in statewide elections for two decades.

The SurveyUSA poll of 558 likely voters was sponsored by the Osborn campaign.

It was conducted from Friday to Monday and has a margin of error of 4.8 percentage points.

Forty-five percent of respondents said they would vote for Osborn, and 44% said they were supporting Fischer. Eleven percent of voters said they were undecided.

The poll found that Osborn has the support of a majority of women and voters under 50.

Fischer is seeking a third term in the Senate. In 2018, she won reelection by 19 percentage points.

The GOP has a significant advantage in Nebraska, where there are more than 610,000 registered Republicans, compared with 330,742 Democrats and 273,360 nonpartisans.

In the state’s other Senate race, Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts is far ahead of Democrat Preston Love Jr., according to the poll.

Fifty-three percent of respondents supported Ricketts, with 35% backing Love and 12% undecided.

In the race for the White House, former President Donald Trump leads Vice President Kamala Harris 56% to 40%, the poll says.
