Car destroyed in crash with train near Iowa-Nebraska border

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – No one was injured in a crash involving a coal train east of the Iowa-Nebraska border on Sunday.

The train hit a car around 9:30 p.m. on Austin Avenue, just north of the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, and the vehicle caught fire.

The Missouri Valley Fire Department initially responded, but volunteer firefighters from Modale, a small village to the north, arrived to help put out the fire.

“This incident could have been a lot worse,” officials said in a Facebook post. “Even with technology, training and guarding available, accidents like these still occur.”

Officials asked drivers to be cautious around the train tracks, as the crossing arms were damaged in the crash.
