Carpet Land headed to American Legion World Series

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) –  The Carpet Land Spartans (Lincoln East) are headed to the American Legion World Series after defeating the St. Michael Mikes 8-7 in the Central Plains Regional Championship.

After a scoreless top of the 1st, the Spartans got things going thanks to an RBI double by Mason Gaines to put them up 1-0.

Lincoln would add to their lead in the second inning courtesy an RBI double by Landon Sandy followed by an RBI triple from Owen Laessig making it a 3-0 ballgame.

The Mikes would eventually bring a run around in the 3rd inning as Grant Riedel delivered a run to cut into the lead.

In the top of the 4th, St. Michael would claim the lead by scoring 3 runs in the inning to make this a 4-3 game.

An RBI double by Matthew Maulik and a sacrifice fly from Landon Sandy would help Lincoln reclaim the lead in the 4th.

The Spartans would add to their lead in the 5th thanks to a two run RBI triple by Gaines, 7-4 after 5 innings.

However, a three-run homer by Riedel would tie this game up at 7, sending this game into extra innings.

With 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th inning, a Landon Sandy single would seal the victory for the Spartans as they walk it off and win 8-7.

The Spartans will now head to Keeter Stadium in Shelby, North Carolina to compete for an American Legion World Series title beginning August 10th.
