‘Cars will race side by side’: Northwest Lincoln resident worried about speeding

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A woman from northwest Lincoln is upset over the amount of highway traffic entering Northwest 12th Street.

Debra Nelson-Rezac and her husband have lived in the Highlands neighborhood for the past 20 years, and she said she’s never seen traffic as bad as it is now.

The street is a 35 mph zone with houses on both sides. Nelson-Rezac said she see about six to 12 vehicles an hour going well over the speed limit.

“It’s a two-lane street, and cars will race side by side,” she said.

On Tuesday, a fence across from the Highlands Golf Course was being fixed after someone crashed into it over the weekend.

There’s also an elementary school and a pool nearby, so Nelson-Rezac said she’s concerned about the kids playing outside in the area.

“Nobody’s been hurt yet, but with this increased traffic, some kid’s going to dart out there, and they’re not going to be able to react.”

She would like the city to put up cameras to deter speeding and she urged people to slow down.

“Just take a step back and look at your surroundings,” Nelson-Rezac said. “Know what you’re going into, what’s around you. Know you see a pool, you see a golf course.”
