Cass County prepares for possible evacuations due to flooding

Nebraska has been hit hard by flooding twice in just 3 months.
“We lost everything, so it’s pretty scary,” Plattsmouth resident, Kevin McCann said.
Some of the thousands of Nebraskans who lost their homes are now having to go through another round of worry.
“During the March flood, my heart was breaking,” Plattsmouth resident, John Hancock said. “I was more worried because we couldn’t get to the house for 4 days, we had to stand back and see all the ice and water like this swirling around my house.”
Heavy rainfall over the past week caused rivers to swell and forced residents in Cass County to prepare for evacuations.
“We were probably filling 150 sandbags, we were building walls up against the door and garage door, just
trying to sandbag and keep the water out because it’s probably 2 or 3 feet up against the door right now,” McCann said.
The water, normally 60 feet away, now rushing through backyards in Buccaneer Bay, a community in Plattsmouth.
Some residents are already pumping water out of their basements.
Although residents say this flooding does not compare to the one in March, the help they have received from the community has remained the same.
“It’s just great knowing people care, you know, what do you say to that?” Hancock said.
“We have amazing people in this state, I wouldn’t want to go through this in California or New York,” McCann said. “I’m sorry, I am not pointing fingers or playing politics but I want to go through it here with Nebraskans.”
There are no mandatory evacuations in Cass County at this time.
