Cass County to study intersection near Greenwood where four died in crash

GREENWOOD, Neb. (KLKN) — Cass County is looking at ways to improve an intersection where four Lincoln men were killed in a crash on the Fourth of July.

County Commissioner Alex DeGarmo said the county is conducting a study with the Nebraska Department of Transportation on Highway 63 and Church Road near Greenwood.

Authorities say street lighting will be added to this and potentially other intersections along Church Road.

“NDOT will conduct the study and will come back to us with a final cost estimation,” DeGarmo said.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said a Lincoln man failed to stop on July 4, leading to the crash that claimed four lives.

The Mexican Consulate in Omaha said the four men killed were members of the same family.

A manager at Speedee Mart, a gas station near the scene, told Channel 8 earlier this month that it is a dangerous intersection and said employees are often scared of passing through it.

DeGarmo agreed that something needs to be done.

“Highway 63 and Church Road has been a dangerous intersection for a while,” he said.  “I’ve heard from constituents that say we should have lights there.  And personally, I’ve seen people run that stop sign.”

DeGarmo asked for the study earlier this year, months before the crash happened.

“I actually requested that we start the study back in April,” he said. “And then it’s an ongoing process to get this done.”
