LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A sheriff in central Nebraska was convicted Thursday in an insurance fraud case.

Valley County Sheriff Casey Hurlburt pleaded no contest this week.

In exchange, his charge was reduced from insurance fraud to attempted insurance fraud, a misdemeanor.

Hurlburt submitted an insurance claim to State Farm for a crash involving a 2004 Monte Carlo.

He said the accident happened in October 2022, according to court records.

But it actually occurred in March of that year, before he bought full insurance coverage for the vehicle.

Hurlburt was fined $1,000 and ordered to pay $137 in court costs.

Under the plea agreement, he must give up his law enforcement license.
