A statement was released by CEO of CHI Health, Dr. Cliff Robertson on Tuesday in regards to cutting staff in 2015.

CHI Health is committed to fulfilling a Mission of building healthier communities and doing so in a way that allows us to be good stewards of limited financial resources. Consistent with that Mission, and similar to other health systems across the country, we are right-sizing our organization to reflect changing patterns of how and where care is delivered. Health care is too expensive and will be until we can move to a value-based care model that has proven it can save money and improve patient outcomes and quality. We are taking the difficult steps that are required so that our organization will thrive in the next era of healthcare in this country.

Leadership at Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) is working to reduce expenses due to decreasing utilization of services across the country. The initial savings will be made by reduced travel, using fewer consultants and contractors and limiting hiring. As of January 30, 2015, we expect reductions in staffing. I don’t know how many positions that will be or from which areas. CHI nationally is looking at a total of 1,500 administrative and support positions being impacted.

We will continue our focus on providing excellent patient care even as these difficult decisions are being implemented. We will work together across our organization to eliminate redundancies and build a stronger health care system to improve the health of our communities in Nebraska and southwest Iowa.
