Cigarette sales increase amid pandemic; first time in 20 years

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Tobacco sales have never been better at G & J Smoke & Vape Shop, near 48th and Huntington Ave.
The owner, Khaeiry Kheder, says 2020 was their busiest year yet. They had a hard time keeping their shelves stocked because cigarette and vape products were so popular.
“A lot of people were out of jobs or laid off and being bored at home and everybody needs their habits, cigarettes or vapes, so it was a boring moment. I think that’s the reason why it got increased over 20 to 25%,” Kheder said.
Montego cigarettes and E-cigarettes have not only gained popularity during the pandemic in Lincoln but across the state and country.
In fact, during the pandemic, cigarette sales rose for the first time in 20 years.
“In Omaha as well, there are a few wholesalers I know that their business has increased a lot,” Kheder said.
According to the Federal Trade Commission’s new annual cigarette report, manufacturers sold close to a billion more cigarettes in 2020 compared to 2019.
Data shows people were buying in bulk, in case of shortages.
Local shops haven’t seen business like this in over two decades and hope this increase will stick around for the long haul.
“I hope we keep increasing, that’s what I hope. And I hope this pandemic goes away soon,” Kheder said.
