City council bans gas bikes, mopeds from Lincoln trails. Could e-bikes be next?

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln City Council voted unanimously Monday to regulate certain forms of transportation on trails.

The council voted to ban things like gas-powered bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles and golf carts.

The new rules don’t affect electric bikes, scooters and skateboards, which have become increasingly popular in recent years.

But many residents think these regulations are just the start.

There’s a speed limit of 25 mph on the city trails, but some have concerns that electric bikes and scooters are making things more dangerous.

City Councilwoman Sandra Washington said Monday’s action opens up the topic for more discussion.

“We will have a conversation about the use of e-bikes, recognizing that there’s many items that we need to discuss on this and many perceptions,” she said. “The Parks Department will lead that conversation and do the research necessary so we can have a full understanding of where that will go.”
